Freemasonry in Iowa





Many people are proud of their heritage. By petitioning for membership in an Iowa Masonic lodge, you will be associated with an Iowa fraternal order that was organized in 1844, several years before our state was admitted into the Union. Freemasonry, however, dates its formal beginnings to the 17th Century. Thus, you will become, upon acceptance, a member of not only the oldest (and most prestigious) fraternity in Iowa, but also in the entire world. You will become a member of an organization whose Iowa roots extend back to our first territorial governor and whose heritage includes many of Iowa’s finest citizens.

There were many Masons among the vanguard of pioneers that came to the Territory in the early 1840’s. They came in wagons and on boats, settled along the Mississippi, and staked their claims. Some of them were farmers, but there were also merchants, teachers, businessmen, miners, lawyers, and politicians, all of them anxious and excited about the opportunities that awaited them in the “heartland” — Iowa — “the beautiful land” as the Indians called it.

By the time the “Iowa Territory” was two years old, the settlers discovered they had a fraternal kinship. According to the records, the first Masonic meeting in the Iowa Territory was held on the evening of November 6, 1840, in the Burlington carpenter shop of Brother Evan Evans. As a result of that meeting, a dispensation was granted on November 20, 1840, by the Grand Lodge of Missouri to form a Masonic lodge at Burlington.

Several months later (on February 4, 1841) similar action was taken resulting in the formation of Iowa Lodge No. 2 at Bloomington (later to become Muscatine).

Dubuque Lodge No. 3 was officially formed by the pioneer Masons in Dubuque on October 10, 1842.

On December 9, 1842, nine Masons met in Iowa City to organize the last of the four lodges which would form the Grand Lodge of Iowa, A.F. & A.M.

A delegation was appointed to attend the next session of the Grand Lodge of Missouri with a petition to form the Grand Lodge of Iowa. The request was granted on January 2, 1844, and, just one week later, delegates from those first four lodges met in a room over Sanxer’s Iron Store in Iowa City and organized the Grand Lodge of Iowa, A.F. & A.M.

The first four lodges were officially designated as Des Moines Lodge No. 1 (with 25 members), Iowa Lodge No. 2 (with 20 members), Dubuque Lodge No. 3 (with 28 members), and Iowa City Lodge No. 4 (with 28 members). Total membership of the Grand Lodge of Iowa was 101 members.

161st Grand Master to Lead Indiana Freemasons.

Gregory C. Walbridge was installed as the 161st Grand Master of the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Indiana during the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge, held at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, May 17-18, 2011. The Grand Master of Freemasons in Indiana is the highest authority within the Fraternity. The Grand Master serves for a one year period beginning at his installation in office on May 18, 2011.


Gregory C. Walbridge is a native of Fort Wayne and attended the Fort Wayne public schools. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Construction Engineering and Management. While at Purdue he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity and raced in the Purdue Grand Prix. It was also at Purdue where he met his future wife, Susan. After working in the construction and engineering fields in Houston, Pittsburgh and New Jersey, the Walbridges moved back to Fort Wayne and began working in the family solid waste and recycling business. He is Past President of National Serv-all and has lead Southwest Development and Earth First in land development and solid waste and recycling ventures.

The Walbridges have been married for 28 years and reside in Fort Wayne. They have four children, Ryan, Michael, Sarah and Marie.

Mr. Walbridge is a Past Master of Waynedale Lodge No. 739 in Fort Wayne. He also holds memberships in the Scottish Rite, Valley of Fort Wayne, Mizpah Shrine, the Fort Wayne York Rite Bodies, Red Cross of Constantine and the National Sojourners. He received the Sovereign Grand Inspector General, 33 in 2004. He was appointed to the Grand Lodge officer line in 2006.

Mr. Walbridge started the family foundation known as the RMSM Foundation in 1997 which supports numerous Fort Wayne area non-profits. He also co-founded There Is Hope, an after-school program for underprivileged children where they get one on one tutoring help daily and a strong Christian message and guidance. He has also served on the Canterbury School and Aboite New Trails and is a member of Young Presidents Organization and the Ancient Mystical Order of Rosicrucians.

Desde el principio de los tiempos el hombre ha evolucionado en la historia a través de su conciencia o la toma de conciencia de los procesos internos y externo que lo han afectado directamente y que han moldeado su conducta y su forma de ver los procesos naturales que intervienen en su entorno, todos estos procesos han ayudado a este hombre a moldear su conducta y a determinar de manera lógica su presencia en el plano material y de diferenciar o discernir de lo que es bueno o malo para él como ser humano pensante, la toma de conciencia no es más que la toma de conocimiento , es el proceso más hermoso y determinante del desarrollo humano ya que a través de esto se toma conocimiento de dos factores que intervienen e intervendrán durante todas las vidas materiales y espirituales en un hombre el conocimiento de sí mismo y el conocimiento de su entorno.
La conciencia es el pensamiento íntimo que pertenece a todo hombre y que determinará en él su forma de actuar en la sociedad; la libertad de conciencia es algo que sólo puede ser juzgable por el Arquitecto del Universo, el hombre con sus leyes regulan las relaciones de los hombres entre sí, El Arquitecto del Universo a través de las leyes de la naturaleza regula las relaciones entre el hombre con El.
La Libertad de Conciencia es algo sagrado para la masonería y para todo masón ya que tomando en cuenta lo anterior expuesto el masón tiene presente que todo ser humano es poseedor y dueño de su conciencia y de practicarla de manera espontanea y libre; porque debemos presentar las diferencias entre pensar y conciencia que son dos cosas muy diferentes y que se tiende a confundir, el hombre a través de sus leyes regula es el pensamiento del hombre y el Arquitecto del Universo a través de las leyes de la naturaleza da al hombre las herramientas para que este adquiera conciencia.
A través de la libertad de conciencia es posible una verdadera civilización y progreso del ser humano, todo hombre tiene un proceso que debe pasar en este plano para adquirir conciencia de las actividades que interviene y afecta su entorno y su vida, es por ello que en la sociedad se encuentra diferentes niveles de conciencias que interactúan entre sí para que el conocimiento sea universal, el entender que todos los seres humanos perciben de modos diferentes y entendemos de la realidad distintas imágenes y distintas visiones es esencial para que se pueda convivir de manera armoniosa y libre; la masonería entiende esto y sabe que el atentar al libre pensamiento es faltar a la caridad ya que tiene conocimiento de que toda creencia es respetable cuando es sincera y conduce a la práctica del bien.
La libertad de conciencia para el hombre es indispensable para su desarrollo íntimo, el adquirir conciencia de que el que vive, percibe, siente, observa, escucha, aprende es el espíritu no la carne es un proceso que con la vida y el conocimiento de la verdad se va desarrollando y cambiando la percepción de la naturaleza; el respetar este proceso interno y externo del ser humano es respetar la vida que el Arquitecto del Universo da a los hombres para su desarrollo y evolución necesario en los diferentes planos de la vida espiritual.

50th Anniversary of Grand Lodge of South Africa.

This year the Grand Lodge of South Africa is celebrating its 50th year as a Grand Lodge.

The Grand Lodge was founded in April 1961 and up till that time local Lodges were administrated by the Grand East of the Netherlands.

The celebrations will be held in Cape Town on 19th and 20th and 21st of August.

Grand Lodges from Africa and the rest of the Masonic world have been invited to share in this great occasion.

11th Annual Conference of African Grand Lodges

On the 17th and 18th of August the Grand Lodge of South Africa will be hosting the 11th Conference of African Grand Lodges.

This conference is held annually and is hosted in turn by associated Grand Lodges in Africa.

The Conference will be held in Cape Town and promises to be an important event.

The delegations will be led by their Grand Masters and will also be attended by the Grand Secretaries.

The Grand Lodge of South Africa is honoured to be able to host the event this year and is ready to welcome all.
